Chapter Twelve

The Bellagio was a twenty-minute walk, but I ended up running as much as I could. I didn’t want to waste a moment. I was hot and sweaty by the time I got inside the air-conditioned hotel. There was time to freshen up, so I went into the toilet, then messaged Antonio when I was ready.

I’m here at the Bellagio.

Daniel at the concierge desk has an envelope for you. Give him my name, Antonio Baldini and say you’re Max. Room 25020. He’ll tell you where to go.

There was only one man at the concierge desk and I was relieved that his name tag read Daniel. He looked me up and down as I told him who I was. With a smirk, as though he knew, he handed over an envelope with my name on it and told me where to go. I thanked him, and only when I was in the lift did I think to give him a tip. It was too late now, and the thought of Antonio in the robe was enough to stop me going back.

In the lift, I texted James to let him know the room number, and took my time walking there so I could make sure he got it. He replied with a smiley face and told me to be careful.

Antonio’s room was in the middle of the hall, and I took a deep breath before I knocked on the door, and then listened for movement. Nothing happened, and even though I didn’t want to let myself in, I guessed that was why I had a key. I tapped the key card and opened the door. The room was so much bigger than mine at Treasure Island, and it didn’t overlook the motorway like mine did.

“Antonio,” I called out when I didn’t find him on the bed, like his earlier picture had indicated he would be.

The bathroom door was closed, and I presumed he may not have heard me. I shouted out to him that I was here and set my bag down and walked over to the window. He’d gotten a great room. I could see the Paris hotel opposite, with the faux Eiffel Tower lit up for everyone to see. The other hotels had their lights on too, and I could make out Planet Hollywood to the right, but it was the Bellagio’s fountains which grabbed my attention. I couldn’t hear the music, but I knew the show was in full swing with the way the lake was lit up and the jets of water that were spraying up in different directions. Even after all this time, the strip and the fountains were a sight to be seen.

His hand made me jump as he slid it around my waist and hugged me.

“You smell good,” he whispered into my ear.

The vibration of his voice sent shivers through my body and I rested my head on his shoulder. He twisted me round so we were face-to-face, nose-to-nose.

“Hi.” I breathed out and swallowed the lump in my throat.
